The Society started in 2003 as the GEFCO Golf Society by the employees of the company, which had set up a new distribution hub in Corby in 1994. The company ran an established Golf Championship which was competed for on a yearly basis. This was a national event and was held on some notable courses; The Machrie (Isle of Islay), Old Head of Kinsale (Eire), Le Touquet (France) to name just a few, this continued for 20 years until I retired in 2014. Incidentally in what proved to be the last competition, I picked up the Le Lapin prize, last place, losing by one shot to Tony Gilbert!
However, the employees wanted more regular golf, so the GEFCO Golf Society was formed, with Doug Grant the first captain. We are fortunate to have some of the original staff still playing. Many of the original monthly trophies that were played for came from the industry or management; The Mike Webb trophy, The Doug Nash trophy, as well as from suppliers like Walon, Assured Valeters.
The Society has evolved over the years with many new members and other societies joining to bring fresh blood. However, on the flip side we have also lost some dear friends; Rolie Horsley, Archie Lindsey, Jim Ogilvie and John Callender.
The Society always produced an excellent newsletter, but as technology progressed it was decided to develop a web site. However, as nearly all of the players were now not connected with the company and the issues of putting info online under the company’s logo, it was decided to change our name to the Dogleg Golf Society in 2017.
Two men who are the backbone of the society and do an excellent job: Vic Cosgrove, Secretary and Web Master and Tony Gilbert, Treasurer, keeping the finances in order. When they took over in 2010, new software was acquired to maintain handicaps and to run new annual competitions, The Order of Merit, Most Improved Player and Eclectic. At this point our website was also established.
The Society also runs a yearly oversees tour, which is well organised by Dean Fox. Countries visited; Spain, Portugal. The 2020 trip to Morocco was postponed due to Covid-19!!!!.
